FREMONT'S MEGHAN JACOB
SIGNS WITH WAYNE STATE
April 13-----Wayne State College track and
field coach Marlon Brink has announced that Meghan Jacob of
Fremont High School has signed a national letter of intent
to attend Wayne State College and compete in cross country
and track and field for the Wildcats in the 2007-08 school
year. Jacob becomes the fifth student athlete from Nebraska
to sign with Wayne State this week, joining Jenna McCoy of
Lincoln Pius X High School; Melissa McIntosh of Ainsworth
High School, Paige Pollard of Newcastle High School and Danae
Stuhr of York High School as members of the 2007 recruiting
class.
Jacob is a three-year letter winner in track and field and
cross country at Fremont High School, helping the Tigers to
a district championship and fourth place finish in Class A
at last fall’s State Cross Country Championships. She
is a three-year state cross country qualifier and has earned
academic all-state honors in cross country as a junior and
senior.
“Meghan will be a great addition to our team at Wayne
State College,” said Brink. “She has the potential
to continue to improve on the college level at the longer
distances. I believe she will fit in well with our women’s
cross country as they try to defend their NSIC Championship
this fall. Meghan is also an outstanding student, which follows
with the other outstanding student athletes we have had on
our women’s teams.”
Wayne State College is an NCAA Division II school located
in Wayne, Nebraska and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference. The Wildcat women’s cross country team won
the 2006 NSIC championship while the women’s indoor
track and field team placed second at the 2007 NSIC Indoor
Championships.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAM EARNS ACADEMIC HONOR
February 8------The Wayne State College
women’s cross country team has earned Academic All-American
honors from the United State Track and Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association. For a team to qualify as an all-academic
team, student-athletes on the team must maintain a cumulative
grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Wildcats had a 3.217
team grade point average to qualify for the honor for the
second straight season.
Wayne State captured the 2006 Northern Sun Conference Women’s
Cross Country Championship for the first time in school history
and placed 10th out of 24 teams at the NCAA Division II North
Central Regional Championships, the best ever finish for a
Wildcat squad at regionals.
Wayne State College is an NCAA Division II school located
in Wayne, Nebraska and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference.
WILDCAT WOMEN 10TH, MEN 17TH
AT NORTH CENTRAL REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
November 4-----Wayne State College hosted
the NCAA Division II North Central Regional Cross Country
Championships Saturday at the Wayne Country Club. The region
has produced the last 14 national champions in both men’s
and women’s divisions. The top five men’s teams
and the top six women’s teams along with the top two
individuals from a non-qualifying team advance to the NCAA
Division II National Championships in Pensacola, Florida on
November 18.
In the men’s division, Adams State of Colorado won the
team title with 26 points, followed by Western State (55),
Colorado Mines (71), Minnesota State Mankato (138) and Augustana
(193) all qualifying for the national meet. Wayne State finished
17th out of 21 teams with 495 points.
Individual national qualifiers from the men’s division
were Eric Atkinson of Minnesota-Duluth and Tyler Wetering
of South Dakota. The top individual finisher for Wayne State
was senior Jeremiah Herron, who was 53rd out of 134 runners
with a time of 33:42 on the 10,000 meter course.

In the women’s division, Western State topped Adams
State for the team title 40-48. Univ. of Colorado-Colorado
Springs was third at 107, followed by Augustana (127), North
Dakota (152) and Fort Lewis at 228 to qualify for the national
championships. Wayne State had its best ever finish at a regional
meet as the Northern Sun Conference champions took 10th out
of 24 teams with 284 points.
Individual national qualifiers were Amy Lindner of South Dakota
and Kaci Lickteig of Nebraska-Kearney. Wayne State freshman
Megan Zavorka placed 22nd out of 154 runners with a time of
22:48 over the 6,000-meter course. Randolph freshman Melissa
Schmit was next for the Wildcats in 48th place at 23:36.

WAYNE STATE WOMEN CAPTURE
FIRST NSIC TEAM TITLE, MEN TAKE FOURTH AS HERRON WINS INDIVIDUAL
CROWN
October 21------The Wayne State College
women’s cross country team won their first Northern
Sun Conference Championship Saturday in St. Paul, Minnesota
while the Wildcat men’s squad placed fourth as senior
Jeremiah Herron won the individual championship in the men’s
division.
WSC outscored the University of Mary 36-49 to win the women’s
title as three Wildcat runners placed in the top 10 to earn
All-Conference honors. Freshman Megan Zavorka (Torrington,
Wyo.) placed second overall with a time of 23:30 on the 6,000-meter
course, followed closely by Randolph freshman Melissa Schmit
in third at 24:07 and Sarah Thomsen, another freshman from
Wahoo, finishing eighth at 24:48.
“Our women’s team ran great today, up to their
potential,” said WSC head coach Marlon Brink, who was
named the NSIC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.
“We peaked at the right time and having three All-Conference
finishers is very exciting. The team reached their goal, winning
the conference championship.”

In the men’s division, MSU Moorhead topped Northern
State 40-57 for the team title with Winona State in third
at 73 and Wayne State fourth with 85 points. Concordia-St.
Paul rounded out the team scoring with 92 points while the
Univ. of Mary did not have enough runners for a team score.
Senior Jeremiah Herron (McCook) captured the individual title,
running 27:04 over the 8,000-meter course to finish 13 seconds
ahead of runner up Dane Moreland of MSU Moorhead (27:17).
Sophomore Ryan Williams was the next finisher for Wayne State,
coming in 15th place with a time of 28:53. “Watching
Jeremiah dominate the men’s field was the highlight
of the men’s race as he controlled the race from the
two-mile mark on,” said WSC head coach Marlon Brink.
“It was nice to see him come out on top as a senior.
Overall, I was disappointed with the team finish. Our lack
of depth and youth showed.”

NSIC RUNNER OF THE WEEK HONOR
October 10-----Jeremiah Herron of Wayne
State College has been honored by the Northern Sun Conference
office as the league’s Men’s Cross Country Runner
of the Week following his performance in last Saturday’s
Briar Cliff Invitational.
The senior from McCook, Neb. placed third at the Briar Cliff
Invitational in a season-best time of 27:04 over the 8,000-meter
course. This is the fourth meet in a row that Herron has been
the top finisher for the Wayne State men’s team as he
helped the Wildcats to a second place team finish.
Wayne State is off this weekend and will compete in the Northern
Sun Conference Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota on Saturday,
October 21.
ZAVORKA WINS THE BRIAR
CLIFF INVITATIONAL, WSC FINISHED SECOND IN MENS AND WOMENS
DIVISION
October 8----Wayne State finished second
in both the men’s and women’s divisions at the
Briar Cliff Invitational which was held at the Adams Nature
Preserve at McCook Lake, South Dakota on Saturday morning.
Morningside edged the WSC women 40-41, while the Mustangs
also finished just in front of the WSC men 59-69.
Freshman Megan Zavorka finished first with a personal best
time of 18:48.09 to lead the WSC women’s team on the
5,000-meter course. Sarah Thomsen (Wahoo, Neb.), Megan Knudson
(Norfolk, Neb.) and Molly Gibson (Grand Island, Neb.) all
finished in the top 10 with seventh (19:47.43), ninth (19:54.86)
and tenth place (19:56.03) finishes, respectively.
Head coach Marlon Brink was pleased with his team’s
performance. “We had five girls who had personal best
times of one minute or more on a legitimate course, so we
are starting to peak at the right time,” Brink remarked.
Freshman Melissa Schmit did not run because of a sore leg
otherwise the ‘Cats may have won the team title. “If
we had ran her, we would have won the team title, but the
NSIC Championship title is our main focus – so it was
more important to rest her,” Brink added.

Jeremiah Herron and Matt Schneider finished third and fourth
to lead the men’s team on the 8,000-meter course. Herron

Coach Brink feels Herron and Schneider both should contend
for the NSIC Individual Championship in two weekends. “Jeremiah
and Matt ran good races today. They should both be in contention
for the NSIC Individual Championship,” added Brink.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
October 3----Megan Zavorka of Wayne State
College has been honored by the Northern Sun Conference office
as the league’s Women’s Cross Country Runner of
the Week following her performance in Saturday’s NCAA
Pre-Regional meet held in Wayne.
The freshman from Torrington, Wyoming placed eighth in a time
of 23:26 on the 6,000-meter course, a 56 second improvement
from her personal best time on a 6,000-meter course. The meet
featured the #5, #6, #7 and #8 ranked teams in the North Central
Region. It’s the first time that a WSC female runner
has been honored by the league office this season.
Wayne State will compete at the Briar Cliff Invitational at
McCook Lake, South Dakota on Saturday with the women’s
race at 10:00 am and the men’s race at 10:45 a.m.
FORMER WSC STANDOUT JAMES MCGOWN
QUALIFIES FOR 2008 OLYMPIC MARATHON TRIALS
October 2-------Former Wayne State cross
country and track standout James McGown has qualified for
the 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials after placing 11th in Sunday’s
Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
McGown’s time of two hours and 22 minutes met the qualifying
standard for the 2008 Olympic Trials, which will be held in
New York City in November, 2007. The 32-year-old McGown is
currently a teacher and head cross country coach at Sidney,
Nebraska. He is a 1998 graduate of Wayne State College, where
he earned NCAA Division II All-American honors in cross country
(1997) and indoor and outdoor track and field as a senior
in 1998, placing fourth in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA
Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships and third
in the 10,000 meter run at the 1998 NCAA Division II Outdoor
Track and Field Championships.

WAYNE STATE RUNNERS AT PRE-REGIONAL MEET
September 30------Wayne State College hosted
the Pre-Regional Cross Country Meet on a gorgeous Saturday
morning at the Wayne Country Club course. South Dakota edged
Augustana College 34-37 to win the men’s title with
North Dakota (65) and Wayne State (85) rounding out the team
scoring. In the women’s division, Augustana won a close
team race by one point over Nebraska-Omaha, 56-57. South Dakota
was third at 63, followed by North Dakota (65) and Wayne State
with 101 points.
The WSC women’s team was led by freshman Megan Zavorka
of Torrington, Wyoming, who placed eighth overall on the 6,000-meter
course with a time of 23:26. Randolph freshman Melissa Schmit
came in 13th for Wayne State at 23:41.

WILDCATS HAVE STRONG SHOWING
AT GRIAK INVITE IN MINNESOTA
September 23-----The Wayne State College
cross country teams had strong showings at the University
of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Wildcat women’s team placed 15th out of 29 teams
overall and was the top Northern Sun Conference team at the
meet while the men’s squad took 35th out of 52 teams
and was second among the NSIC schools participating in the
meet.
Black Hills State won the women’s division with 96 points,
followed by Concordia of California (103), Wisconsin La-Crosse
(117), UC-San Diego (141) and Northern Michigan (171) in the
top five. Wayne State finished with 411 points.
The top runner for Wayne State was freshman Melissa Schmit,
who was 42nd overall out of 278 runners with a time of 24:17
on the 5,000-meter course. Her time was second best among
NSIC runners. Sophomore Megan Zavorka was close behind in
47th at 24:22.

The WSC men’s team was 35th out of 52 teams
with 996 points and second out of Northern Sun Conference
schools, trailing only MSU Moorhead who was 31st with 800
points. Concordia California won the team title with 46 points,
followed by Wisconsin-La Crosse (80), Minnesota State (158),
Wartburg (206) and Wisconsin-Platteville (224).
Jeremiah Herron was the top WSC men’s runner, placing
86th overall out of 509 runners with a time of 27:31, which
was second among all NSIC runners in the meet. Junior Matt
Schneider was close behind in 90th place with a time of 27:32
on the 8,000-meter course.

STRONG AT UNL, MEN STRUGGLE
September 16-----The Wayne State College
cross country teams competed Saturday at the Woody Greeno
Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Wildcat women’s
squad placed 10th with 246 points while the men’s squad
from Wayne State was 20th with 566 points.
Freshman Melissa Schmit led the Wayne State women’s
team with a 17th overall placing in a time of 24:21 on the
6,000-meter course. It was the second-best ever time for a
WSC women’s runner on the UNL course. Megan Zavorka
came in 24th place in the Division II, Division III and the
NAIA division with a time of 24:42. Other WSC times included:

“Our women’s team ran exceptionally well today,”
said WSC head coach Marlon Brink. “We are still a very
young and inexperienced team, but they are learning quickly.
Melissa Schmit and Megan Zavorka did a great job as our front
runners and the rest of the team did a good job staying close
as a team and not let any large gaps develop.
The WSC men’s team was led by Jeremiah Herron with a
57th place finish in 28:32 on the 10,000 meter course. Sophomore
Ryan Williams followed in 140th place with a time of 30:09.

“The men’s team struggled this week,” commented
Brink. “Our gap from our first to fifth runner is too
large and we will have to really work to improve on that to
be competitive in future meets.”

23rd at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota.
MATT SCHNEIDER HONORED
AS NSIC'S FIRST MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
September 6-----Matt Schneider of Wayne
State College was honored Wednesday afternoon by the Northern
Sun Conference as the league’s first men’s cross
country runner of the week. The junior from Nebraska City
placed fourth overall at the South Dakota Don Baker Open last
Saturday with a time of 27:03 over the 8,000 meter course.
His time was an improvement of 39 seconds from one year ago
on the same course. Schneider is a two-time All-NSIC performer
for the Wildcats, placing second as a sophomore last season
and third in 2004 as a freshman.
Wayne State will next compete at the UNL/Woody Greeno Invitational
in Lincoln on Saturday, September 16.
WAYNE STATE RUNNERS OPEN
SEASON AT SOUTH DAKOTA DON BAKER MEMORIAL MEET
September 2-----The Wayne State College
cross country teams opened the 2006 season Saturday at the
Don Baker Memorial Meet held at the University of South Dakota.
No team scoring was kept.
The top finisher for Wayne State was Matt Schneider, who placed
fourth in the men’s division with a time of 27:03 on
the 8,000-meter course. Other Wildcat finishers included:
Jeremiah Herron, 7th in 27:32; Ryan Williams, 14th at 30:07
and Jimmie Doherty placed 15th at 31:12.
“We ran a limited squad in the men’s race for
various reasons, but were able to see that some guys are in
pretty good shape,” remarked WSC head coach Marlon Brink.
“Matt Schneider improved by nearly 40 seconds from last
season in the first meet and Jeremiah Herron was 11 seconds
faster as both runners looked comfortable in their first races
of the season.”
Randolph freshman Melissa Schmitt, in her first-ever cross
country race, led the Wildcat women’s team with a seventh
place finish in a time of 19:39 on the 5,000 meter course.
Megan Zavorka came in eighth place at 20:11 while Megan Knudson,
a freshman from Norfolk Catholic, crossed the line in ninth
in 20:55. Other WSC finishers were: Erin Oswald-12th at 21:18;
Molly Gibson-13th at 21:26; Ashley Smith-14th in 21:56 and
Meghan Costello 15th at 22:19.
“Overall, I was pleased with our women’s results,”
commented Brink. “Melissa Schmit had a very good race
for her first-ever cross country race. I think she will continue
to improve and is ahead of where Erin Norenberg and Haley
Reeves (1st and 2nd in the NSIC last season) were at in this
meet one year ago,” stated Brink. “Megan Zavorka
and Megan Knudson both competed well for the first meet of
the season.”
Wayne State’s next meet will be on Saturday, September
16th at the Woody Greeno Invitational at the University of
Nebraska in Lincoln.
SCOTTSBLUFF'S MICHAEL
TARIN TO RUN FOR WSC
August 2-----------Michael Tarin of Scottsbluff
has signed a national letter of intent to enroll at Wayne
State College and compete in cross country and track for the
Wildcats this season, announced WSC head coach Marlon Brink
today.
Tarin, recently graduated from Scottsbluff High School, was
a four-year cross country and track and field standout, helping
the school win three straight Class B boys state cross country
championships. As a four-year qualifier, Tarin’s best
finish at the state cross country meet was 11th (17:22.24)
as a junior. In track and field as a senior at the State Track
Meet, Tarin ran a leg on the Class B state champion 4 x 800
meter relay team and just missed a medal in the 1600 meter
run, taking seventh with a time of 4:28.964.
“Mike brings a strong running background to our program,”
remarked Coach Brink. “He has been a part of winning
three cross country state championships at Scottsbluff High
School and I think he can bring that championship mentality
to fit into our team. Mike will be a very good cross country
and middle distance runner for Wayne State.”
Michael Tarin is the son of David and Ramona Tarin of Mitchell,
Nebraska and will major in elementary education at Wayne State
College.
Wayne State College captured the men’s triple crown
in the Northern Sun Conference in running during the 2005-06
season, winning conference championships in cross country,
indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Wayne

THREE RUNNERS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN HONORS

men’s and women’s cross country teams, along with
runners Ben Crabtree, Jeremiah Herron and Haley Reeves, have
earned Academic All-American honors from the United State
Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The
USTFCCCA announced its Academic All-American Individual and
Team Awards for the 2005 cross country season on Thursday.
To qualify for the honors, individuals had to place in the
top 30 percent at their regional meet and have a GPA of 3.25
or higher. For a team to qualify, it had to have a team GPA
of 3.0 and all of the participants in the regional meet had
to comprise that GPA.
The Wayne State women’s cross country team had the fourth-highest
GPA in NCAA Division II at 3.70 while the men’s team
qualified for the honor with a team GPA of 3.11.
Ben Crabtree, a senior from Lennox, S.D., maintains a 3.326
grade point average majoring in exercise science. He is a
three-time All-NSIC Academic selection and is a two-time All-NSIC
performer in cross country, placing seventh as a senior and
ninth as a junior.
Jeremiah Herron, a junior from McCook, Neb., is majoring in
industrial technology education and carries a 3.735 grade
point average. He is a three-time All-Northern Sun Conference
winner in cross country, placing fourth as a junior, second
as a sophomore and ninth as a freshman. He has also earned
All-Academic honors in the NSIC twice.
Haley Reeves, a junior from Gordon, Neb., carries a 4.00 grade
point average majoring in life science/biology. She placed
second at the 2005 NSIC Championships to earn All-NSIC honors
and is a two-time All-NSIC Academic honoree.
The Wayne State men won their first-ever Northern Sun Conference
championship in 2005 while the women placed second as a team.

in Wayne, Nebraska and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference.
