WAYNE STATE GARNERS SIXTH PLACE FINISH AT NSIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

April 15-----The Wayne State College women’s golf team finished sixth at the NSIC Championships that wrapped up today (Sunday) in Yankton, South Dakota at the Fox Run Golf Course. The first two rounds were played last fall in Becker, Minnesota with the final two rounds played over the weekend in Yankton.
Wayne State finished with a four-round score of 1,506 to finish four strokes ahead of Bemidji State. Upper Iowa captured the NSIC title with a four-round total of 1,290, three shots ahead of Winona State. Concordia-St. Paul was third at 1314 with six-time defending champion Southwest Minnesota State in fourth at 1316.
Senior Johnna Olson (Broken Bow) posted the top score for Wayne State with a four-round total of 358 after shooting a final round 88. Other final round scores for WSC were Kelsee Katsampes 88, Hayley Pile 90, Shana Heggemeyer 99 and Jenna Meyer 104.

TWO AREA STANDOUTS SIGN WITH WAYNE STATE WOMEN'S GOLF PROGRAM

April 11------Ali Fuchtman of Norfolk and Heather McCabe of Plainview have signed national letters of intent to attend Wayne State College and play golf for the Wildcats next fall.
Fuchtman is a transfer from Briar Cliff University who was a standout golfer at Norfolk Catholic High School and will have three years of eligibility with the Wildcats. Fuchtman placed second in Class C in 2005 with a 168 (82-86) to help Norfolk Catholic win the Class C State Girls Golf Championship. She was named team MVP as a senior and most dedicated player as a sophomore and junior at Norfolk Catholic and helped the Lady Knights to a runner up finish at state as a junior. Fuchtman will join high school teammate Hayley Pile on the Wildcat women’s golf roster.
“Ali is going to be a great player for Wayne State,” commented PGA Golf Professional Troy Harder, who assists the Wildcat women’s golf program in recruiting and player development. “She is familiar with being part of a winning program at Norfolk Catholic and will help us get that same winning tradition at Wayne State College. We are pleased to sign a player of her talent.”
McCabe was a four-year standout at Plainview High School, qualifying for state all four seasons. She was the Class C runner-up as a senior after shooting rounds of 89-78 for a two-day score of 167, a career-best score for McCabe, helping Plainview to a second place team finish. McCabe won five gold medals in tournaments as a senior and also placed 11th at state as a junior. She also excels in the classroom, earning three Academic All-State awards in golf along with being named to the 2006 Class C All-State Girls Golf Team.
“Heather McCabe is going to be a great asset to the Wayne State women’s golf program,” remarked Harder. “She had a very successful high school career and will step right in and help us build towards a conference championship. Heather will fit in very well with the weather that we play in after watching her shoot a 78 at last fall’s state tournament in the pouring rain.”

WAYNE STATE FINISHES SEVENTH IN STRONG FIELD AT MISSOURI WESTERN INVITE

March 26-----The Wayne State College women’s golf team faced stiff competition at the Missouri Western Invitational played Sunday and Monday at Fairview Golf Course and Moila Country Club in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Wildcats finished the two-day tournament in seventh place with a team score of 812 after shooting rounds of 401 and 411.
Nebraska-Omaha captured the team title with a 664 (339-325), 28 shots better than Upper Iowa’s 692 (351-341). Rounding out the team scoring were Concordia-St. Paul third at 702 (346-356), Rockhurst fourth at 719 (362-357), Missouri Western fifth at 744 (382-362) and MSU Moorhead in sixth at 776 (404-372).
Leading the way for Wayne State was senior Johnna Olson, placing 30th overall with scores of 94 and 101 for a two-day total of 195. Norfolk Catholic freshman Hayley Pile followed in a tie for 31st at 200 (97-103) with Gretna freshman Kelsee Katsampes next in 34th place at 210 (107-103). Other WSC scores included Shanna Heggemeyer in 37th place at 220 following rounds of 103 and 117 while Pender freshman Jenna Meyer finished in a tie for 38th place at 226 after rounds of 122 and 104.
Rachael Schmidt of Upper Iowa was medalist for the meet with rounds of 81 each day for a two-day score of 162, two shots better than Nebraska-Omaha’s Sara Wolfe (83-81) at 164.
Wayne State will be in action on Sunday and Monday (April 1 and 2) playing at the University of South Dakota Invitational in Vermillion.

DANA COLLEGE EDGES WAYNE STATE IN WILDCAT WOMEN'S GOLF SPRING CLASSIC

March 19-------Dana College edged Wayne State 368-374 to win the Wildcat Women’s Golf Spring Classic played Monday afternoon at the Wayne Country Club. Iowa Western Community College was a close third at 377.
Shanna Miller of Iowa Western CC captured individual medalist honors with an 85, topping Wayne State’s Johnna Olson in a scorecard playoff on the second hole. Emily Duncan of Dana College was third at 88, Kelsee Katsampes of Wayne State took fourth at 89 and Brooke McCabe of Dana College finished fifth at 90.
Besides Johnna Olson (85) and Kelsee Katsampes (89), other Wayne State scores included Hayley Pile with a 92, Roxie Maine shot 108 and Shana Heggemeyer posted a 109.
Wayne State will be in action on Saturday and Sunday (March 24 and 25) playing at the Missouri Western Invitational in St. Joseph, Missouri.

WILDCATS OPEN SPRING SEASON WITH THIRD PLACE FINISH AT WSC INVITE

March 18-----Dakota Wesleyan shot a 347 to easily capture the Wayne State College Spring Invitational Women’s Golf Tournament played Sunday afternoon at the Wayne Country Club. The Tigers were 32 strokes better than second place Dana College at 379 with Wayne State in third at 383. Iowa Western Community College (387) and Midland Lutheran (397) rounded out the team scoring.
Dakota Wesleyan’s Heather Snavely captured medalist honors by firing a 79. Teammate Nora Quinters was second at 85. Rounding out the top five were Kate Becker of Midland Lutheran in third at 85, Krystle Alexander of Dakota Wesleyan fourth at 86 and Shanna Miller of Iowa Western CC in fifth at 86.
Wayne State’s top scorer was senior Johnna Olson with a 89. Freshman Hayley Pile (Norfolk Catholic) shot a 92 followed by 93 by Gretna freshman Kelsee Katsampes. Other WSC scorers included Shanna Heggemeyer at 109 and Jenna Meyer shot 118.
Wayne State will host the Wildcat Classic on Monday at the Wayne Country Club.

WAYNE STATE IN SEVENTH AFTER FIRST STAGE OF NSIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

October 9-------The Wayne State College women’s golf team is in seventh place after the opening 36 holes of the Northern Sun Conference women’s golf championships held in Becker, Minnesota over the weekend. The final 36 holes of the 72-hole event will be played during the 2007 spring season. The Wildcats shot a 398 and posted a 34 shot improvement on Sunday for a 364 to finish the opening 36 holes at 762. Winona State is the team leader at 657, followed by Upper Iowa (659), Southwest Minnesota State (669), Concordia-St. Paul (671), MSU Moorhead (752), Bemidji State (761), Wayne State (762), University of Mary (770) and Northern State (786). Minnesota-Crookston did not field enough players for a team score.
Senior Johnna Olson (Broken Bow) leads the Wildcats after the first 36 holes with a score of 182 after shooting rounds of 97 and 85, good for 25th place overall. Norfolk Catholic freshman Hayley Pile (96-89) and Gretna freshman Kelsee Katsampes (94-91) each shot 36-hole scores of 185, Shana Heggemeyer posted scores of 111 and 105 for a 216 and Jenna Meyer shot 122 and 99 for a 36-hole total of 221.
This was the final meet of the 2006 fall season for the Wayne State women’s golf team.

WILDCATS FINISH 13TH AT TWO-DAY NEBRASKA WESLEYAN INVITATIONAL

October 3------The Wayne State College women’s golf team shot 780 to place 13th out of 15 teams at the two-day Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational played Sunday and Monday in Lincoln. Sunday’s round was played at Pioneers Golf Course in Lincoln with Monday’s round held at Highlands Country Club.
Wayne State shot an even 400 in Sunday’s round followed by a 20-stroke improvement on Monday with a 380. Nebraska-Omaha won the tournament with a two-day total of 641, three shots better than Truman State of Missouri.
Norfolk Catholic freshman Hayley Pile led Wayne State with rounds of 93 and 89 for a two-day total of 182. Broken Bow senior Johnna Olson was next at 190 (97-93), followed by Kelsee Katsampes, a freshman from Gretna, shot 101 and 92 for 193 and Pender freshman Jenna Meyer posted scores of 112-106 for a 218.
Wayne State will wrap up the 2006 fall season at the Northern Sun Conference Championships Saturday and Sunday in Becker, Minnesota.

WAYNE STATE TAKES FOURTH AT MIDLAND LUTHERAN INVITE---OLSON'S 87 GOOD FOR THIRD PLACE

September 26-----The Wayne State College women’s golf team shot a 394 to place fourth Tuesday afternoon at the Midland Lutheran Invitational played at the Pines Country Club in Valley, Neb. Host Midland Lutheran won the team title over Dana College in a playoff after both teams carded rounds of 354. The University of Sioux Falls was third at 386 with Wayne State next at 394. Concordia had three players compete and did not field a team score.
Wildcat senior Johnna Olson (Broken Bow) fired an 87 to finish third overall. Norfolk Catholic freshman Hayley Pile just missed a top 10 finish, taking 11th with a 93. Other WSC scores included Jenna Meyer with a 112, Shana Heggemeyer shot 113 and Roxi Maine finished with a 128.
Karla Harshbarger of Dana College was medalist for the meet with an 82, one shot better than Midland Lutheran’s Kate Becker.
Wayne State will compete at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational in Lincoln on Sunday and Monday, October 1 and 2.

NORTHWESTERN TOPS WAYNE STATE AT WILDCAT FALL CLASSIC-JOHNNA OLSON CLAIMS MEDALIST HONORS WITH 89

September 15------Northwestern College topped Wayne State 379-385 to win the Wayne State College Fall Classic women’s golf tournament played Friday afternoon at the Wayne Country Club. Several other teams scheduled to compete withdrew due to thunderstorms in the Wayne area earlier in the day.
Johnna Olson of Wayne State earned medalist honors with an 87, two shots better than Northwestern’s Kelsey Shiflett. Wayne State’s Kelsee Katsampes was third at 92, Rachael Koenigsburg took fourth at 93 and Alison Stutzman of Northwestern was fifth at 95.
Wayne State’s next meet will be at the Briar Cliff Invitational in Sioux City on Thursday and Friday.

WAYNE STATE WOMEN FINISH STRONG AT INTERSTATE 80 CLASSIC

September 8-----Three members of the Wayne State College women’s golf team participated in the Interstate 80 Classic played Thursday in York and Friday in Hastings. Senior Johnna Olson (Broken Bow) posted the top two-day score for the Wildcats, shooting a 95 at York Country Club Thursday and an 85 at Lochland CC in Hastings Friday for a two-day total of 180. Gretna freshman Kelsee Katsampes fired a 94 at York and a 96 at Hastings for a two-day total of 190 and Norfolk Catholic freshman Hayley Pile shot a 193 after rounds of 105 at York and 88 at Hastings.
Dakota Wesleyan won the nine team tournament with a 672, 21 shots better than runner up Hastings College. The individual medalist was Kelli Baseley of Dakota Wesleyan with a 161, shooting rounds of 84-77.
“I was pleased with the second day results,” remarked WSC women’s golf coach Troy Harder. “York is a hard course for anyone to play and the girls came back with a solid performance at Lochland the second day to give us strong momentum heading into our tournament on Friday.”
Wayne State will host the Wildcat Fall Classic on Friday, September 15 at the Wayne Country Club starting at 12 p.m.

HAYLEY PILE SHOOTS 86 AT SEASON-OPENING RED RAIDER INVITATIONAL

September 1-------Three members of the Wayne State College women’s golf team opened the season Friday afternoon at the Red Raider Invitational in Orange City, Iowa, hosted by Northwestern College. Hayley Pile, a freshman from Norfolk Catholic, had a strong showing in her first-ever collegiate meet, placing 14th overall with an 86. Senior Johnna Olson (Broken Bow) carded a 95 while Gretna freshman Kelsee Katsampes finished with a 99.
Dakota Wesleyan and Waldorf College tied for the team title in the 13-team tournament with a 335. Midland Lutheran placed third at 340, followed by Dana College (354) and Briar Cliff (355) rounding out the top five. Morningside’s Kristi Tighe was the individual medalist for the meet with a 79.
Wayne State is expected to field a full team on Thursday and Friday at the Interstate 80 Classic in York and Hastings.

KELSEE KATSAMPES OF GRETNA AND JENNA MEYER OF PENDER TO JOIN WSC WOMEN'S GOLF PROGRAM

May 16-----Kelsee Katsampes of Gretna High School and Jenna Meyer of Pender High School have signed national letters of intent to attend Wayne State College and play golf for the Wildcats next fall. They join Hayley Pile of Norfolk Catholic as members of the 2006 WSC women’s golf recruiting class.
Katsampes helped Gretna to a fifth place finish in the Class B state tournament last fall as a senior, shooting a 94 in one of her rounds at the state tournament. She also played basketball and softball at Gretna High School, qualifying for the state basketball tournament in 2005 and the state softball tournament in 2003.
Meyer was a four-year starter and letterwinner at Pender High School, qualifying for the state tournament her junior and senior seasons. She placed 13th at the state meet as a junior with rounds of 95 and 84 and helped her team win the East Husker Conference Championship as a senior. Her career best score of 84 was shot at the state tournament. Meyer also earned Academic All-State honors as a junior.
“We are very excited to sign a pair of players from Nebraska,” remarked PGA Golf Professional Troy Harder, who assists the Wildcat women’s golf program in recruiting and player development. “Both players have had successful high school careers with extensive state experience and will be called on to help build the women’s golf program at Wayne State into a conference contender.”

HAYLEY PILE OF NORFOLK CATHOLIC SIGNS WITH WSC WOMEN'S GOLF TEAM

April 21-----Hayley Pile of Norfolk Catholic High School has signed a national letter of intent to attend Wayne State College and play golf for the Wildcats next fall.
Pile was a four-year letter winner and a two-year state qualifier while competing for Norfolk Catholic in girl’s golf. She placed eighth at the Class C State Girls Golf Tournament last fall, helping the Knights win the state championship. Pile shot a personal best round of 83 at last year’s state tournament and helped the Knights to a second place finish at state as a junior. She is also a four-year honor roll student.
“We are very excited and fortunate to sign a player like Hayley,” remarked PGA Golf Professional Troy Harder, who assists the Wildcat women’s golf program in recruiting and player development. “Hayley is a proven player that comes from a strong program at Norfolk Catholic and she is an area player who will be counted on to help strengthen the women’s golf program at Wayne State College.”
Hayley Pile is the daughter of John and Kandace Pile of Norfolk and the great great granddaughter of Wayne State College founder James Pile.

PGA GOLF PROFESSIONAL TROY HARDER TO ASSIST WSC GOLF PROGRAMS

February 23-----Wayne State College athletic director Eric Schoh announced today that PGA Golf Professional Troy Harder will assist with the Wildcat men’s and women’s golf programs at the school effective immediately. Harder will focus on recruiting, player development and all other aspects of the men’s and women’s golf programs at Wayne State College.
“Anytime you can have a PGA Golf Professional involved in your program is a tremendous advantage,” said Schoh. “We’re very excited to have Troy on our team and are confident that he will develop our golfers and programs.”
Harder serves as PGA Golf Professional at the Wayne Country Club, where he has worked for the past 10 years.
The Wayne State College men’s and women’s golf teams play spring and fall schedules with the Northern Sun Conference championships being played during the fall season.

Wayne State College placed 27 studenta athletes, the most of any NSIC school in 2007-08, on the Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievment Awards. Each student athlete had to maintain at least a 3.50 grade point average to qualify for the award.


WSC was picked to finish third in the South Division and seventh overall in the 2008 NSIC Preseason Football Coaches Poll released on Monday, August 4th during NSIC Media Day in Mankato, Minnesota. Wildcat junior quarterback Silas Fluellen was selected by coaches as the South Division Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.


The Wayne State at Nebraska-Kearney season opening football game will kickoff at noon on Saturday, August 30th at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field in Kearney. Some earlier website schedules had the game listed for a 6:00 p.m. start.
