#1 Danielle Wessel 5-8, Junior, Outside Hitter Humphrey, Neb. (Humphrey St. Francis HS) 2006: Played in all 38 matches at outside hitter for the 'Cats as a sophomore. . . Finished with 245 kills, 124 digs, 69 total blocks, 44 set assists and 16 service aces. . . Had season-high 13 kills against MSU Moorhead on 9-8-06 and Concordia-St. Paul in the regional semi-final on 11-10-06.
2005: Appeared in 13 matches and played in 16 games for the Wildcats as a freshman. Finished with eight kills, three digs and three blocks. Had season-high three kills vs. Winona State on 10-15-05.
High School: Selected D-1 First Team All-State Captain and led Humphrey St. Francis to a state championship as a senior. Was also selected to the Class D-1 All-Tournament Team, the Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Team and was captain of the Norfolk Daily News All-Area Team. She recorded 168 kills, 177, digs and 318 set assists during her senior season. Also starred in basketball and track at Humphrey St. Francis and helped the Flyers to a state basketball title this past season. Personal: Daughter of Dan and Sheri Wessel. . . Concordia-St. Paul topped #15 Wayne State 10-6 Sunday afternoon in the NSIC Baseball Tournament championship game. The 40-11 Wildcats await word from the NCAA on a at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Official pairings are to be released Sunday evening by the NCAA.
Nate Preston won three events to lead the WSC men to a third straight NSIC outdoor track and field championship Saturday in Wayne. The Wildcats scored 164 points to nip second place Mary (156.5) for the team title. Brett Suckstorf won two events (hammer throw and discus) for WSC.
The WSC women's track and field team finished in third place with 106 points at the NSIC Championships in Wayne. Katie Wilson won two events (hammer throw and discus) and took second in the shot put to lead the Wildcats.
The NSIC Office announced Saturday that the NSIC Baseball Tournament has been shortened to a single-elimination tournament with Wayne State and Concordia-St. Paul (the last two undefeated teams in the tournament) playing Sunday at 1 p.m. in Wayne and the winner earning the NSIC Tournament Title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Nick Schumacher struck out a career-high 14 batters in a complete game win to lead #15 Wayne State to a 9-1 victory over Southwest Minnesota State at the NSIC Baseball Tournament in Wayne. The 40-10 Wildcats will play in the winner's bracket final Saturday at 10 a.m. against either Bemidji State or Concordia-St. Paul.
Seven WSC baseball players were named to the 2008 NSIC All-Conference Baseball Team announced Thursday afternoon. Nick Schumacher was named the NSIC Pitcher of the Year, Marc Manganaro earned the NSIC Co-Player of the Year while Nick Bidroski was selected the NSIC Co-Freshmen of the Year.
