SCOTT BARNES OF PAPILLION-LAVISTA
HIGH SCHOOL SIGNS WITH WAYNE STATE
April 25------Scott Barnes of Papillion-LaVista
High School has signed a national letter of intent to attend
Wayne State College and play golf for the Wildcats in the
2007-08 school year. Barnes is a four-year letter winner at
Papillion-LaVista High School under coach Joe Pudenz, a former
Wildcat men’s golfer. He won eight medals as a junior
last season while posting a 76.3 stroke average to earn All-District
honors at Papillion-LaVista High School.
“Scott has had a very good high school career,”
commented PGA Golf Professional Troy Harder, who assists the
Wildcat men’s golf program in recruiting and player
development. “He has been around golf for a long time
with his dad, Ross, being a PGA Golf Professional in Omaha.
It is nice to sign a player of his talent and I think Scott
will fit into our program immediately.”
Wayne State College is an NCAA Division II school located
in Wayne, Nebraska and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference.
WILDCATS WRAP UP
SPRING SEASON AT NORTHWESTERN INVITE
April 19-----The Wayne State College men’s
golf team wrapped up the 2007 spring schedule Wednesday at
the Northwestern Invitational at Landsmeer Golf Club in Orange
City, Iowa. The Wildcats finished in 11th place with a team
score of 335. Lee Olson posted the top score for the Wildcats
with a 79, followed by Josh Reinders at 83, Brian Torpin shot
86 with Jared Wetovick and Matt Bialas each carding 87. Three
other Wildcats competed as individuals with Brent Hoesing
shooting 78, Drew Shively finishing at 82 and Keith Eriksen
recording an 85.

WILDCATS OPEN SPRING
SCHEDULE WITH NINTH PLACE FINISH AT SOUTH DAKOTA
April 2-----The Wayne State College men’s
golf team opened the 2007 spring schedule today (Monday) at
the USD Invitational at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion,
South Dakota. The Wildcats finished in ninth place with a
team score of 337. Jared Wetovick and Lee Olson shot the top
rounds for Wayne State with scores of 82. Keith Eriksen followed
with a 85 while Brian Torpin shot 88 and Drew Shively 90.
The next meet scheduled for Wayne State will be Saturday,
April 14 when the Wildcats participate in the Buena Vista
Invitational at Storm Lake, Iowa.

WAYNE STATE TAKES SEVENTH
AT NORTHERN SUN CHAMPIONSHIPS
October 8-------The Wayne State College
men’s golf team placed seventh at the Northern Sun Conference
Championships held in Becker, Minnesota on Saturday and Sunday.
The Wildcats finished with rounds of 333 and 329 for a two-day
total of 662. Winona State ran away with the team title with
a two-day score of 587, 24 shots better than runner up Bemidji
State’s 611. The University of Mary was third at 634,
followed by Minn.-Crookston (637), Concordia-St. Paul (648),
Upper Iowa (653), Wayne State (662) and Northern State (688).
Norfolk sophomore Drew Shively led the Wildcats with rounds
of 79 and 80 for a two-day score of 159. Other WSC scores
included Jared Wetovick with a 166 (84-82), Brian Torpin shot
a 168 (86-82) and Keith Eriksen shot 169 (84-85). Winona State’s
Brady Strangstalien was the individual medalist with rounds
of 74 and 68 for a 142.
The NSIC Championships conclude the 2006 fall season for the
Wayne State men’s golf team.
WILDCATS FINISH SEVENTH
AT FALL CENTRAL REGIONAL
October 3-----The Wayne State College men’s
golf team competed over the weekend at the Central Regional
Fall Invitational held in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and hosted
by the University of Minnesota-Crookston. The tournament was
played at the Wildflower Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday
with Wayne State placing seventh with team scores of 334 and
342 for a 676. Bemidji State won the tournament with a 585,
nine shots better than Winona State. Upper Iowa (607), Minnesota-Crookston
(608), Concordia-St. Paul (629), University of Mary (647)
and Wayne State (676) round out the team scoring.
Lee Olson, a freshman from Valley, was the top finisher for
Wayne State with rounds of 76 and 82 for a two-day score of
158 to place 26th overall. Brian Torpin was 39th overall after
rounds of 84 and 87 for a 171. Other WSC finishers were Brent
Hoesing (87-86) with a 173 and Alec Rector (8-87) at 174.
Bemidji State’s Michael Abrahamson was medalist for
the meet with a 69-72 for three-under par 141.
Wayne State will conclude the 2006 fall season at the Northern
Sun Conference Championships in Becker, Minnesota on Saturday
and Sunday.

CLAIMS WSC FALL CLASSIC---WILDCAT TEAMS PLACE SECOND AND THIRD
September 15-----Northwestern College shot
a blistering 292 to easily win the Wayne State College Fall
Classic Men’s Golf Tournament played Friday at the Wayne
Country Club. The Wayne State Black team (varsity) was second
at 313, followed by the Wayne State Gold team (JV) at 314.
Northwestern’s JV squad was fourth at 324, Dordt came
in fifth at 328 and the Dordt JV squad took sixth at 341.
Players played in a steady rain most of the day and had to
sit through four weather delays to finish the tournament.
Northwestern’s TJ Korver fired a two-under par 70 to
earn medalist honors for the meet. Teammates Justin Pannkuk
and Dan Laaveg finished second and third with rounds of 72
and 73 respectively. Rounding out the top five scores were
Alec Rector of the Wayne State Gold team at 76 and Lee Olson
of the Wayne State Black team with 76.
Following Olson’s 76 for the WSC Black team were Jared
Wetovick with 77, Brian Torpin shot 78, Keith Eriksen 82 and
Zach Roeder posted an 88.
After Rector’s 76 for the WSC Gold team were Drew Shively
with 78, Matt Bialas and Josh Reinders each with 80 and Brent
Hoesing shot an 83.
The next meet for Wayne State will be on Thursday, September
21 at the Northwestern Invitational in Orange City, Iowa.
MORNINGSIDE WINS WSC MEN'S

September 14-----Morningside College captured
the Wayne State College Men’s Golf Invitational played
today at the Wayne Country Club, topping Midland Lutheran
by seven strokes for the team title, 302-309. Buena Vista
and the Hastings College “C” team tied for third
at 312, followed by Wayne State Black (varsity) in fifth at
323, Wayne State Gold (JV team) sixth at 325, Briar Cliff
seventh at 330 and Concordia College eighth at 332.
Andrew Martin of Morningside College captured medalist honors
with a 74, beating teammate Chris Rager in a scorecard playoff.
Wally Byrne of Buena Vista was third at 75, Brian Primavera
of the Hastings College “C” team fourth at 75
and Jason Zoz of Midland Lutheran fifth at 76.
Jared Wetovick led the Wayne State Black team with a 77, followed
by Lee Olson at 79, Brian Torpin finished with an 81, Drew
Shively 86 and Alec Rector 87.
Keith Eriksen carded a 78 to lead the Wayne State Gold team.
Zach Roeder shot 81, Brent Hoesing and Matt Bialas each posted
scores of 83 and Josh Reinders came in at 88.
Wayne State will be in action again on Friday, hosting the
WSC Fall Classic at the Wayne Country Club starting at 9:00
a.m.
WILDCAT MEN COMPETE AT DORDT
COLLEGE INVITE
September 13-------The Wayne State College
men’s golf team competed Tuesday afternoon in the Dordt
College Invitational played in LeMars, Iowa. The Wildcat JV
squad shot a 323 to place 11th out of 14 teams while the varsity
team finished 12th at 325.
Laurel-Concord juniors Brent Hoesing and Zach Roeder posted
the top scores for the WSC JV team with scores of 78 and 80
respectively. Other JV scores from Wayne State included Keith
Eriksen with 81, Matt Bialas at 84 and Josh Reinders shot
87.
Jared Wetovick, Brian Torpin and Lee Olson each shot 81 for
the Wayne State varsity squad. Alec Rector carded an 82 and
Drew Shively shot 85.
Morningside captured the team title with a 291, 10 shots better
than runner up Northwestern. Buena Vista (305), Briar Cliff
(307) and University of Sioux Falls (310) rounded out the
top five team scores. Morningside’s Justin Hamilton
was medalist for the meet with a 71, beating teammate Brad
Huyck in a playoff.
Wayne State will host a pair of home meets on Thursday and
Friday with the Wayne State Invite on Thursday at 1 p.m. and
the Wayne State Classic starting Friday morning at 9 a.m.
at the Wayne Country Club.
WAYNE STATE OPENS FALL SEASON
AT BUENA VISTA INVITATIONAL
September 6------The Wayne State College
men’s golf teams opened the 2006 fall season Wednesday
afternoon at the Buena Vista Invitational held in Storm Lake,
Iowa. The Wildcats placed ninth out of 13 teams with a 327
while the JV squad took 11th at 334. Host Buena Vista captured
the team title with a 296, 12 shots better than runner up
Northwestern’s 308 while Dakota Wesleyan placed third
at 311.
Brian Torpin, a senior from O’Neill, led the Wildcats
with a round of 77 to tie for 14th overall. Other varsity
scores included Jared Wetovick, a senior from Fullerton, with
an 80; Lee Olson, a freshman from Valley, at 82, Norfolk sophomore
Drew Shively shot an 88 and Alec Rector finished with a 94.
The Wildcat JV squad was topped by Laurel-Concord juniors
Zach Roeder and Brent Hoesing, who shot 81 and 82 respectively.
Matt Bialas carded an 83, Josh Reinders shot 88 and Keith
Erickson came in with a 96.
The next meet for Wayne State will be Tuesday, September 12
when the Wildcats play at the Dordt College Invitational.
WAYNE STATE INKS PAPILLION-LAVISTA
AND DOUGLAS COUNTY WEST STANDOUTS
July 14-----Wayne State College head men’s
golf coach Matt Murken has announced the recent signings of
Tyler DeJong of Papillion-LaVista High School and Lee Olson
of Douglas County West High School in Valley to national letters
of intent to join the Wildcat men’s golf program for
the 2006-07 season.
DeJong was a two-year letter winner in golf at Papillion-LaVista
High School, coached by former WSC golfer Joe Pudenz. DeJong
had four top 10 individual finishes during the 2006 season
and will major in agri-business at Wayne State College. He
is the son of Barry and Mary DeJong of Papillion, Nebraska.
“I am pleased that Tyler has joined our golf program
at Wayne State,” said Coach Murken. “He had a
successful high school career, but I believe that Tyler’s
best golf is ahead of him. He is a great addition to the Wildcat
men’s golf program.”
Olson earned four letters and was a three-time MVP at Douglas
County West High School (formerly Valley HS). He carded a
65 to win the Capitol Conference Tournament as a senior and
holds the course record at the Pines Country Club in Valley,
where he fired a 64 during Junior Golf League. Olson medaled
in every high school tournament he played in with the exception
of one as a freshman.
“I think Lee’s accomplishments at the high school
level speak for themselves,” commented Murken. “I
am extremely pleased to add Lee to our golf program. He will
have an immediate impact on our team.”
SIOUX CITY HEELAN'S
ADAM FIELDS SIGNS WITH WILDCATS
July 7-----Wayne State College head men’s
golf coach Matt Murken has announced the recent signing of
Adam Fields from Sioux City Heelan High School in Iowa to
a national letter of intent to join the Wildcat men’s
golf program for the 2006-07 season.
Fields is a three-year varsity letter winner in golf and baseball
at Heelan High School. He recorded a 76.2 scoring average
during his senior season, placing runner up in the Mighty
Mo and Ex-Sioux Interstate Conference Tournaments. As a junior,
Fields notched a 78.4 scoring average and won four tournaments,
including the Mighty Mo, CYO Tournament and the city championship
in Sioux City. Fields is also the two-time defending champion
of the Junior Interstate Tournament and has placed in the
top five of the men’s city tournament in Sioux City
the past two seasons. He also excels in baseball, earning
First Team All-Conference first baseman honors in 2005 while
helping Sioux City Heelan win the Iowa Class 3A State Baseball
Title.
“Adam is a very talented golfer who will contribute
right away at Wayne State,” said Coach Murken. “He
is one of the best high school golfers in this area and he
has the ability to make some great improvements. I look for
Adam to have a very successful career at Wayne State.”
