Matt Murken is in his fourth season with the Wildcats. He is the Wildcat post player coach and serves as the recruiting coordinator, camp coordinator, academic coordinator and organizes off-season individual workouts. He was a graduate assistant coach in 2003-04 and moved up to full-time assistant in the 2004-05 season. As a graduate assistant at Wayne State he was in charge of perimeter players, tape exchange and assisted in all aspects of recruiting. Murken comes to Wayne State after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. While at Mount Mercy, Murken helped the Mustangs to a 34-25 record over two seasons and a national ranking both years. He controlled the perimeter players in addition to recruiting and conditioning programs.

Murken got his start at Cedar Rapids Xavier High School in Iowa where he served as an assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach. He was a member of the Saints staff for one season. During his time in Cedar Rapids, he also taught full time at Trinity Lutheran School.

Murken, a graduate of Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska, played shooting guard during his collegiate career. During his playing career, the Bulldogs had three, 18+ win seasons and three trips to the NAIA national tournament. He was also named to the NAIA Academic All-American team twice.

A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Murken attended Prairie High School where he was a two year starter. He was a member of the 1994 team which made the school's first state tournament appearance.

Murken earned his master's degree in sports management at Wayne State College in May, 2006 and resides in Wayne.

Wayne State has earned the #3 seed for the NCAA Div. II Central Regional Baseball Tournament hosted by Emporia State in Kansas. The 40-11 Wildcats meet #4 seed Central Missouri (41-15) in Thursday's first round with game times to be announced Monday afternoon.


Concordia-St. Paul topped #15 Wayne State 10-6 Sunday afternoon in the NSIC Baseball Tournament championship game. The 40-11 Wildcats await word from the NCAA on a at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Official pairings are to be released Sunday evening by the NCAA.


Nate Preston won three events to lead the WSC men to a third straight NSIC outdoor track and field championship Saturday in Wayne. The Wildcats scored 164 points to nip second place Mary (156.5) for the team title. Brett Suckstorf won two events (hammer throw and discus) for WSC.


The WSC women's track and field team finished in third place with 106 points at the NSIC Championships in Wayne. Katie Wilson won two events (hammer throw and discus) and took second in the shot put to lead the Wildcats.


The NSIC Office announced Saturday that the NSIC Baseball Tournament has been shortened to a single-elimination tournament with Wayne State and Concordia-St. Paul (the last two undefeated teams in the tournament) playing Sunday at 1 p.m. in Wayne and the winner earning the NSIC Tournament Title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.


Nick Schumacher struck out a career-high 14 batters in a complete game win to lead #15 Wayne State to a 9-1 victory over Southwest Minnesota State at the NSIC Baseball Tournament in Wayne. The 40-10 Wildcats will play in the winner's bracket final Saturday at 10 a.m. against either Bemidji State or Concordia-St. Paul.


Seven WSC baseball players were named to the 2008 NSIC All-Conference Baseball Team announced Thursday afternoon. Nick Schumacher was named the NSIC Pitcher of the Year, Marc Manganaro earned the NSIC Co-Player of the Year while Nick Bidroski was selected the NSIC Co-Freshmen of the Year.
