Mike Cordes begins his second season as defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at Wayne State College. Cordes will also serve as equipment coordinator for all 15 Wayne State College sports in the 2006-07 school year. Under the guidance of Cordes in 2005, Wayne State ranked first in the Northern Sun Conference in kickoff coverage, allowing just 11.3 yards per kick return. WSC also ranked first in kickoff returns with a 20.7 average.

Prior to coming to Wayne State, Cordes served as linebackers/secondary coach at the University of South Dakota. Cordes was a two-time captain and three-year letterwinner at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, helping the Lopers to an RMAC title in 2002 and a spot in the Division II Playoffs. As a three-year starter, Cordes finished with 12 sacks, 37 tackles for loss and 243 career tackles. Cordes was selected first team All-RMAC in 2002 and second team all-conference in 2001. Prior to playing at Nebraska-Kearney, he played at Wayne State College in 1997, recording 73 tackles and 11 tackles for loss.

Cordes earned his Bachelor's Degree in economics in 2001 and his Master's Degree in sports administration in 2004. He is a native of York, Nebraska and resides in Wayne..

Wayne State has earned the #3 seed for the NCAA Div. II Central Regional Baseball Tournament hosted by Emporia State in Kansas. The 40-11 Wildcats meet #4 seed Central Missouri (41-15) in Thursday's first round with game times to be announced Monday afternoon.


Concordia-St. Paul topped #15 Wayne State 10-6 Sunday afternoon in the NSIC Baseball Tournament championship game. The 40-11 Wildcats await word from the NCAA on a at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Official pairings are to be released Sunday evening by the NCAA.


Nate Preston won three events to lead the WSC men to a third straight NSIC outdoor track and field championship Saturday in Wayne. The Wildcats scored 164 points to nip second place Mary (156.5) for the team title. Brett Suckstorf won two events (hammer throw and discus) for WSC.


The WSC women's track and field team finished in third place with 106 points at the NSIC Championships in Wayne. Katie Wilson won two events (hammer throw and discus) and took second in the shot put to lead the Wildcats.


The NSIC Office announced Saturday that the NSIC Baseball Tournament has been shortened to a single-elimination tournament with Wayne State and Concordia-St. Paul (the last two undefeated teams in the tournament) playing Sunday at 1 p.m. in Wayne and the winner earning the NSIC Tournament Title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.


Nick Schumacher struck out a career-high 14 batters in a complete game win to lead #15 Wayne State to a 9-1 victory over Southwest Minnesota State at the NSIC Baseball Tournament in Wayne. The 40-10 Wildcats will play in the winner's bracket final Saturday at 10 a.m. against either Bemidji State or Concordia-St. Paul.


Seven WSC baseball players were named to the 2008 NSIC All-Conference Baseball Team announced Thursday afternoon. Nick Schumacher was named the NSIC Pitcher of the Year, Marc Manganaro earned the NSIC Co-Player of the Year while Nick Bidroski was selected the NSIC Co-Freshmen of the Year.
