Mike Cordes begins his second season as defensive backs coach
and special teams coordinator at Wayne State College. Cordes
will also serve as equipment coordinator for all 15 Wayne
State College sports in the 2006-07 school year. Under the
guidance of Cordes in 2005, Wayne State ranked first in the
Northern Sun Conference in kickoff coverage, allowing just
11.3 yards per kick return. WSC also ranked first in kickoff
returns with a 20.7 average.
Prior to coming to Wayne State, Cordes served as linebackers/secondary
coach at the University of South Dakota. Cordes was a two-time
captain and three-year letterwinner at the University of Nebraska-Kearney,
helping the Lopers to an RMAC title in 2002 and a spot in
the Division II Playoffs. As a three-year starter, Cordes
finished with 12 sacks, 37 tackles for loss and 243 career
tackles. Cordes was selected first team All-RMAC in 2002 and
second team all-conference in 2001. Prior to playing at Nebraska-Kearney,
he played at Wayne State College in 1997, recording 73 tackles
and 11 tackles for loss.
Cordes earned his Bachelor's Degree in economics in 2001
and his Master's Degree in sports administration in 2004.
