"Met My Mate at WSC" Directory
Myrle '39 and Leone '39 (Cook) Hemenway, Boulder, Colo.:
It was a bright September morning in 1935, the first day
of classes at Nebraska State Teachers College (as it was know
then). The class in Public School Music assembled. Myrle Hemenway
appraised those assembled and settled his eyes on Leone Cook,
a fellow freshman. For the rest of semester Myrle developed
a friendship with Leone but was never able to get her to agree
to a date.
At the end of the year Leone completed her one year teaching
certificate and went to teach in a rural school in Dixon County.
Myrle continued at Wayne State.
The next meeting of Myrle and Leone was at supper in the cafeteria
prior to the opening of classes for the year 1938. Leone had
returned to seek her two year certificate and Myrle was a
senior. Leone was receptive to Myrle's plea for a date and
the two developed a steady relationship. Myrle jokingly says
that her two years of examining the rural youth in Dixon County
made him look better.
At any rate they became engaged in June 1939. Leone returned
to teaching in Dixon County and Myrle to high school teaching
in Iowa.
There were married May 21, 1940 in Maskell, Neb. and will
celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary May 21, 2002.
