"Met My Mate at WSC" Directory
Michael '57 and Darlene '55 (Dietze) Hansen, Bloomington,
Minn.:
At the Freshman Dance on our first week at Wayne State, I
noticed Darlene Dietze sitting waiting for someone to dance
with. I asked her to dance and that was the beginning of what
became a long and very successful marriage. I was an 18-year-old
student from Council Bluffs, and Darlene was from Gretna.
We dated for three years at Wayne and then got married in
August 1956, in Gretna. Darlene taught with a two year certificate
at Allen, NE, while I finished my senior year at Wayne, graduating
in 1957. We went on to the University of Wyoming for my MA,
then to the army for two years, and then to Minneapolis, Minnesota,
for 30 years of teaching history, economics, and English.
We raised three children and have three grandchildren. I continue
to lecture to senior citizens and community groups on history,
and Darlene works part time for the American Cancer Society.
We travel widely and enjoy fishing, golfing, and our friends.
We see old Wayne State friends who live in Minnesota such
as Dave and Darlene Janovy and Dwayne and Carole Peterson.
We both owe a great deal to Wayne State. This summer Darlene
and I will celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary.
