"Met My Mate at WSC" Directory
Larry '42 and Marcia '42 (Cook) Muckey, Clearlake, Calif.:
"It was 1940 and I was a freshman at Wayne, living in
Pile Hall, having a wonderful time, participating in everything,
thrilled with college life. Life was fun. My friend, Charlene
Bunker, ate at Mrs. Carlson's, a boarding table in town where
meals were $.25. Larry Muckey, a junior who lived off campus,
ate at the same place. On November 29, he was complaining
that he couldn't find a girl who stayed over on weekends.
Barbara Pitkin said, 'Give me a dime and I'll give you the
name of a girl who stays EVERY weekend.' He tossed her a dime
and she gave him my name. Barbara lived across the hall from
me in Pile."
"Charlene rushed back to the dorm saying, 'Larry Muckey
is going to call and ask you for a date!' I knew who he was
because he had crashed the Freshman Dance and walked another
friend home. A few minutes later when he called and asked
for a date to a dance the next night, I said I'd like to go.
Then he asked me if I would like to see the play that night.
I said that I would like that
and Nebraska State Teachers
College (as it was known then) became a magical place for
Larry and me
.
"That's how it began almost 61 years ago. Larry likes
to tell people that he met me on a blind date and has been
blind ever since. We've been extremely happy ever since that
date, celebrating our 58th wedding anniversary on May 29th
this year. Wayne State College has many fond memories for
us."
