"Met My Mate at WSC" Directory
Francis '61 and Marilyn '57 (Allstot) Sudbeck, Federal
Way, Wash.:
"I had a blind date arranged by Bill Stevens, another
student at Wayne State. I really didn't want to go out with
this guy that I had never met, but Lois Rabe now Gilchrist
had answered the phone and talked to him. She convinced me
to go out with him. So on a fluke I did accept and found out
on our first date what a nice guy he really was. It was his
father's birthday and he asked me if I minded if he stopped
by to see his Dad and wish him a Happy Birthday before we
went to the movies. My date was Francis Sudbeck of Laurel,
Nebraska. He had a wonderful sense of humor and great blue
eyes that twinkled. I guess that is what attracted me to him.
He was a freshman, on the GI Bill and I was leaving at the
end of May to become a stewardess for United Airlines. Ironically,
we had both been dating other people. We just began seeing
each other almost every day until school was out. I left for
Cheyenne, Wyoming, for my training and he left for Glendo,
Wyoming, to work on road construction and live with his sister.
So we saw each other on weekends. I ended up moving to San
Francisco and by mid-July he also got a job with United Airlines
in San Francisco. We were married September 21, 1957. We returned
to Nebraska, and he graduated from Wayne State in 1961. I
taught school in Pilger and our first daughter was born while
we were living in Anderson Hall on August 1, 1960. We then
had three more children: two boys and another daughter. December
1999, he retired from being an educator for eighteen years
and an elementary principal for eighteen years. I was still
teaching half time in Kent, but got talked into going full
time this year as I am a special education teacher. This will
be my last year of full time teaching. We have many fond memories
of our years at Wayne. After forty-four years of marriage,
I am glad that I accepted that blind date."
