"Met My Mate at WSC" Directory
Don '71 and Diane '70 (Massman) Soukup, Santa Clara, Calif.:
Diane Massman (Class of 1970) met Don Soukup (Class of 1971)
in Dr. Lefsted's Child and Adolescent Psychology Class.
Dr. Lefsted seated everyone alphabetically, with the end of
the alphabet in the front row. I sat directly behind Don,
who always wore shorts and sandals to class. He would slide
down in the seat to lounge, and when he did so his wallet
would almost pop out of his pocket. One day, I reached over
and helped his wallet out of the rest of the way ("the
devil made me do it!"). He did not miss it, and when
class was over, away he went to the Student Union. Don walks
everywhere very quickly and I had to run to catch up with
him to give the wallet back.
Since we were at the Student Union, he invited me to have
a coke and we talked for quite awhile. Shortly after Summer
Session ended, Don moved to Arizona and I started dating his
best friend. Don was in the Army Reserves and his Unit was
in Norfolk so he would drive from Tucson to Norfolk non-stop.
Saturday night he would have free, so he would drive over
to Wayne and take me out.
After I graduated, Don came back to Wayne State to get his
degree. As I was teaching at St. Augustine's Indian Mission,
Winnebago, I would drive over to visit (this was the first
time I learned there was such a thing as a "keg party").
He graduated in June of 1971, and we were married in August
and moved to Arizona.
Thirty years surely have gone by quickly. Don still walks
"at the speed of light", and I still have to run
to catch up with him!
