Wayne State College students continued proving their excellence among their peers with a strong showing at the spring meeting of the Northland Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (NACSM). Dr. Kris Hinnerichs, Dr. Tammy Evetovich, Dr. Donovan Conley and several students from the Department of Health, Human Performance, and Sport recently attended the 26th annual tutorial meeting at Saint Catherine's University in Saint Paul, Minn.
The theme for the meeting was "Perspectives on the Science of Barefoot Running". The meeting provided a forum for students and professionals to interact and network with regional and national scholars in Sports Medicine and Exercise Science and for students to present research papers.
Research abstracts submitted from schools throughout the NACSM (Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa) were blind peer-reviewed by NACSM professionals. Awards were divided into two categories, 68 undergraduates and 13 graduates with the top five and four receiving awards, respectively.
Wayne State College received second place for the undergraduate category. The award winning research abstract from WSC was titled “Cryotherapy Has No Effect on Wingate Test Performance in Female Collegiate Athletes”. Winning student co-authors on the abstract were Sarah Gottschalk, Eva Benson, and Tali Fredrickson.
Hinnerichs and Conley serve on the executive committee for NACSM as Nebraska representative and director of development, respectively.
