Wayne State College Alumnus Earns Prestigious Fulbright Award Published: 5-27-2011 8:40 am Reid Weber, a 2003 Wayne State College graduate, has received a prestigious Fulbright grant to conduct research in Prague in the Czech Republic for the 2011-2012 school year. Weber is a doctoral candidate in history at the University of Florida and is working on his dissertation titled, "Celebrity and Preaching: Jan Hus and Late Medieval Homiletics". He received his master of arts degree at Northern Illinois University in 2007.
Weber served as a peer tutor in U.S. History for five semesters, and was an active participant in the Newman Club, Science Fiction/Fantasy Club, Pi Gamma Mu, and Blue Key while at Wayne State College.
The Fulbright Program is administered by the U.S. State Department and funded by Congress. It is intended to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." These competitive awards are available to scholars in all academic fields for research in 155 participating countries.
To receive this award, Weber had to pass a series of stages including careful review of his grant proposal by scholars at the University of Florida, nationally recognized scholars from around the country, and acceptance by the Czech Fulbright commission. His responsibilities will be to conduct independent research, present his research in speaking engagements, and conduct himself as a representative of the United States as a cultural ambassador.
Reid is the son of Norman and Dorothy Weber of Wisner. He will be joined in Prague by his wife, Katrina Deardoff Weber, and their two daughters, Nina, age 4, and Adela, age 3.
